On a recent trip to the Uncompahgre Wilderness, I witnessed some of the most rugged country I've seen in the United States so far. Valleys bordered by jagged peaks, gnarly pinnacles, and unbelievable spires allowed for very interesting backdrops for landscape shots.
Considering I was visiting as the fall colors were exploding, most of the understory vegetation was withered and dead. Lying at the base of an old fallen tree was one interesting patch of leaves with just a smidgen of life remaining. Forming a wonderful contrast to the rest of the plants, that were apparently quitters, I decided to time my shot just right. I waited until the peaks in the background and my foreground were both illuminated to compliment the shaded forest at treeline.
Overall it was a wonderful afternoon spent in a new and interesting area.

The foreground is a bit too unsettled for my taste, don't know if thats the best comp. But the sky is incredibly well exposed, guess this was the main reason for capturing this scene!
Just trial and error for the hike. I like the range and wanted to capture that, the light, the sky (of course) and something different than I normally do which is a color contrast of greens/yellows against grey/brown.
