In an area I hike quite often, a wildfire has begun.

Starting Monday evening the burn began in the early afternoon. By Tuesday, 400 acres were on fire with only 5% containment. Wednesday, 1,000 acres with 5% containment.

We'll have to wait and see what happens in the days to come. But rest assured two great areas to go and hike are going to be very interesting subjects once this fire is over.

Oh, and the glowing haze is the smoke rolling off the hillside. The fire's color and the long exposure create the red blanket of smoke.

Update: As of Friday 5/18/2012 the fire has grown to 7,300 acres.

Stunning if scary shot. Love the colors and the clarity here. Such a beautiful scene, sad that it's also devastating.

Thank you and yes it is. Fortunately though the fire is a great way to create new and healthy growth! It was much needed but sad that it happened to such a vast area.

Its amazing how beautiful something so devastating can be. I learned a couple of weeks ago that a place I use to live and still love to visit to hike and camp, is battling wildfires. It is just incredibly sad that so many have broken out.

yeah it has been such a dry year. We finally have been getting some rain this weekend but of course I was camping trying to take pics the whole time. But I shot some really moody stuff which I think will turn out great! Where are you from?

I live in Texas now, but lived in New Mexico for too short a time when I was younger.
