Fighting for Dominance

Description

While visiting Rocky Mountain National Park with my buddy Nate, we noticed a bachelor herd of mature bulls hanging around the perimeter of a field of cows and younger males. I decided to approach them and setup within a respectable distance as not to disturb them. Apparently they were quite comfortable with my presence being that after five minutes of shooting they began to spar right in front of me. I have wanted to experience this since I can remember walking through the woods and camping when I was a little guy. To see these two massive bulls fight for dominance has made an impression in my mind I will never forget.

Wow, what a wonderful moment you have captured here! At first when I saw this shot as thumbnail I actually wasn't that impressed, but the composition forcefully invited me to give it another shot from up close. And to be honest with you, I'm glad I got the invitation.

The longer I look at this shot, the more I begin to appreciate it. The composition is fantastic, I love the symmetry in this shot! The fact that the two bulls are almost identical in size combined with the symmetry and low shutter speed gives the viewer the feeling that it's a very intense and even fight.

At first I wanted to give you a lower rating because of the low shutter speed, but the more I think about it the more I begin to think that you've made the right call. The very slight motion blur in the antlers and snow makes this shot more dynamic therefor brings life to the shot.

I also like how the foreground and background are blurred so that all focus goes to the fighting animals. It's a very striking image and it's a shame it didn't hit me sooner.

Well done mate <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile) - :)"/>
